The Ready to Learn Scale is a simple, visual tool designed to help children communicate how ready they feel for learning, without needing to find all the words to explain what is happening for them.
Using five easy-to-understand levels, children can move the slider to show where they are at in that moment, from “I am not ready to learn yet” through to “I am confident and ready to learn.”
Rather than assuming a child is ready to engage simply because it is time to begin, the scale encourages educators, support staff and caregivers to check in first. A lower rating can open up a supportive conversation about what the child might need to feel safer, more regulated, comfortable or ready to participate.
The scale can be used to support self-awareness, emotional and sensory regulation, communication and self-advocacy, while giving adults valuable information about when a child may need additional support or adjustments.
