Autistic Strengths- Checklist

Description

A neurodiversity-affirming reflection and planning tool

Description

The Autistic Strengths Checklist is a strengths-based, neurodiversity-affirming resource designed to support autistic people, families, educators, and professionals to recognise, value, and reflect on autistic strengths - without stereotypes or expectations.

This checklist moves away from deficit-focused thinking and instead offers a compassionate framework for identifying strengths across thinking styles, interests, values, creativity, and wellbeing. It is not a diagnostic tool or assessment, but an invitation to notice what supports thriving.

What This Resource Includes

✔ A comprehensive checklist of autistic strengths across multiple domains
✔ Clear guidance explaining that not all strengths apply to every autistic person
✔ Plain-language, affirming statements that reduce pressure and comparison
✔ Reflection prompts to support self-understanding and advocacy
✔ Flexible use for personal reflection, education, planning, or conversation

Strength Domains Covered

  • Perceptual & sensory strengths

  • Reasoning & thinking styles

  • Special interests and areas of expertise

  • Character and values-based strengths

  • Creative and expressive strengths

  • Social and relational strengths (beyond neurotypical norms)

  • Self-knowledge, regulation, and wellbeing strengths

Who It’s For

  • Autistic people (teens and adults)

  • Parents and caregivers

  • Educators and support staff

  • Therapists, clinicians, and consultants

  • Disability, inclusion, and advocacy settings

    Why This Checklist Is Different

✨ Explicitly states that autism is not a single strengths profile
✨ Avoids stereotypes and “autistic superpower” narratives
✨ Supports autonomy, self-definition, and lived experience
✨ Can be used alongside NDIS planning, school supports, or self-advocacy work

    Important Note

Not all autistic people will identify with every strength listed. Strengths can change over time, appear differently depending on environment, or be hidden by burnout, stress, or lack of support. This resource is affirming, optional, and non-judgemental.
